Citroen Xsara WRC, my favourite WRC, and also the last privately run car to win the championship.

The last privately run car to win the WRC championship? Really, are you sure you're sure about that? I'm sure that you are not sure about that. It's a good looking car though.

Yes I am. Le Grande Sébastien won the World Rally Championship in 2006 with the Xsara, but the team running the car was not Citroen Racing who were busy perfecting the dominant C4, but Kronos Racing. Sure, they got support by the factory, but it still was the last time a private team won the championship.

Well. Technically that is true. Though calling them a private team, for that year, given the circumstances comes with the biggest asterisk possible and it somewhat naive. They were the de facto factory team for Citroen for 2006 though still a privately owned company.

That's the problem, how much support equals a full works effort? I've been debating this over Audi and their GT3 program for years.

I'd say while Kronos in 2006 was on the borderline, it was equal to a private team with admittedly excellent works support, including hiring their drivers and paying the rest of the bill where sponsors left a gap.
